Top 3 Teaser Trailers

These are my top three teaser trailers out of the ones that I have watched for research purposes.

Garden State – Zach Braff

I think this teaser trailer is effective for a number of reasons. The focus of this teaser trailer is not on the actual narrative of the film and is instead more focused on the characters and the general ‘feel’ of the film. Shots have been chosen from the film and have been edited together the give the audience a sense of almost confusion as the shots have no real link between them. I think it introduces the main character fairly well as it shows that he is pretty out of touch with reality and this is shown in shots such as the medium shot of him stood next to a wall with the same pattern as the shirt he is wearing or the long shot of the people jumping into the pool and him still standing on the edge. The choice of track is particularly effective as this give the trailer quite an emotive feel. As the tempo of the track increases, so do the speed of cuts between shots. Towards the end of the trailer, the audience is told a little more about the actors who are staring in the film and many of these are recognisable names so this creates hype and interest for the film. Toward the beginning of the film, the awards are also shown which shows that this is a high quality film.

Toy Story 3 – Lee Unkrich

The Toy Story films have been one of the most successful Pixar films to be released. As it has been 11 years since the release of Toy Story 2, this teaser trailer is incredibly important to the success of this film. I feel this is a very effect teaser trailer as instead of concentrating on the narrative of the film, it focuses more on reminding the audience of the characters in the film. All the well known and much loved characters make an appearance in this teaser trailer and they are all shown with their usual characteristics (for example Mr. Potato Head being bossed around by Mrs. Potato Head and then something on him breaking or falling apart.) This reminds the audience why they loved the previous films and for some viewers this will remind them of their childhood as many have grown up with these characters.

Alice In Wonderland – Tim Burton

This is a very much awaited film for 2010 so this teaser trailer again very important to the success of this film. The focus of this trailer is creating a hype for the release of this film. The teaser trailer firstly creates a hype by at the beginning of the trailer by telling the audience who the director of the film is. As Tim Burton is well known for his weird and wacky films this shows that the quality of the film is going to be high. The voiceover allows there to be a slight narrative to the trailer. There is a definite narrative to this trailer because the story of Alice In Wonderland is well known so there is no real need to hide the narrative and it is more effective to show the lavish special effects of the trailer. Another thing that creates hype is that the audience can realize that the voice over is done by one of the main characters Johnny Depp. As he is a well known actor this will create hype because he is a very good actor and this will create interest as he already has a cult following for the films he is in so fans of films such as Pirates of the Caribbean will come to see the film because of the actor.
